Our latest update - 24th August 2011

Looks like the Holiday season is finishing early this year especially for our politicians and also judging on the flurry of news reaching us in the last two weeks. However the “silly season” prevails with September’s Which? report supposedly highlighting a number of practices failings in providing good advice to researchers. The College and the Confederation respond separately although in similar vein.

The decisions were made by a secret panel of 3 advisors so the profession is not to know of their depth of understanding of practice optometric issues. Maybe they should declare themselves, and really earn their money.

We report on a
major funding boost for Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and how Moorfields is looking for family linked glaucoma sufferers for a gene test.

Allders Opticians in Herts announces a
new concept complete refit by its industry owners.

Action for Blind People has prepared an
interesting and informative document on “How best to approach and help the blind get around”

The BCLA announces the return of its highly popular Workshops, non members on payment can now attend.
We list October’s titles.

One of PHN’s Directors, Bob Hutchinson, has been
invited and elected on to the Council for General Practice and Primary Health Care, the largest section of the Royal Society of Medicine’s members with among its membership over 12,000 GPs. Hutchinson comments on his aspirations for his time on the Council.

Uvex, through Rodenstock, announces a
new sporty ophthalmic range modeled by the German Mountain Bike champion Karl Platt, and Porsche Design announce their latest models.

Grafton Optical reveal their
summer specials, available until 30th September or while stock last.

First to provide information this year for
Silmo 2011 is Oliver Goldsmith with their latest collection. Are there more UK companies with products to highlight?

PHN News Update - 10th August 2011

Our latest update...

Not long now till Silmo 2011 is upon us and for the last 3 years PHN has reported significant interest in UK companies who take the time and effort to exhibit their wares to an International as well as Gallic audience. We noted last year how more ambitious exhibition goers were in trying out new and avante garde products at Silmo. We look forward to receiving those exhibitors briefing notes for this year and will highlight them on a special Silmo page. A trip to Paris might well reignite your enthusiasm for “all things stock” as our Director (Bob Hutchinson) encouraged others who joined him in another practice building Webinar Presentation sponsored by Ocuco last week.

We report on the tussle that has been occurring between a number of PCTs and Domiciliary providers and the success of an advance effort by the AOP regarding VFS equipment. Plus we fortuitously highlight a new system for VFS, especially for those with Alzheimer’s.City University announces new optometric one day courses linked to Essex Primary Care.GOC Director steps down to become CE and Registrar of GCC.

We welcome more supporting newcomers this month in the form of Shamir who have taken pages on the public and the professional site to educate the public on eyecare in the workplace and in action with information on progressives, free form and special coatings for each application. Their support is much appreciated and the information will be of value to the 40,000 or so visits we receive between each site every month. Norville Opticians have also provided us information for their featured pages in www.mylocaloptician.co.uk providing a listing of specialties and products that each of their branches can provide.
